Te Arawa Director Investigates Global Opportunities
Director, Ngaroma Tahana, joined other iwi delegates and Aotearoa Fisheries Limited (AFL) on an international field trip. Delegates ventured to Hong Kong, China, United Kingdom and Spain. Ngaroma saw the trip as an exciting opportunity to gain a greater understanding of the global seafood sector and in particular Sealord's international business.
As part of the hikoi the group visited Sealord's operations in all the countries visited. The group concluded their trip with the World Summit on Sustainable Fisheries, the International Fishing Exhibition and the Aquaculture Development conference all held in Vigo, Spain
Returning home Ngaroma now has a marathon of mahi ahead of her which will no doubt be of great benefit for us here in Te Arawa. Ngaroma said the trip has given her greater insights into the global fishing industry which has allowed her to have a greater appreciation of the directions that Te Arawa Fisheries will be looking to take in the future. Expect to find our seafood on the supermarket shelves of Hong Kong or Europe soon! |

Te Arawa Iwi Debate Moana Protection
Over 50 people joined Te Arawa Fisheries for a hui held at Whakaue Marae on Thursday 3rd September 2009. Among those that attended were representatives from our 11 iwi who gathered to discuss the development of a customary fisheries management plan for Te Arawa, the establishment of an entity to represent Te Arawa for customary fisheries matters and Te Arawa’s aquaculture development.
The biggest areas of discussion concerned the eradication of pollution from lakes and rivers feeding pollutants into the marine environment. Coastal iwi suggested developing their own plans which feed into an overarching plan.
A desire was also expressed to move forward with the establishment of an entity to represent Te Arawa for customary fisheries matters. The current efforts of the Maketu Taiapure were acknowledged but as only 4 of the 12 Te Arawa iwi were represented this group did not embody all. A further hui is planned for February 2010. |
